Alberta's Regulated iGaming Market Goes Live

Canada's second open online gambling market officially goes live as major operators enter the province

Alberta has officially launched its regulated online gaming market today, opening the door for licensed private operators to offer online casino games and sports betting across the province.

The launch marks a major milestone for Canada's gaming industry, making Alberta the second province after Ontario to adopt a competitive iGaming model. Private operators can now legally offer online gambling products under the province's new regulatory framework, ending the long standing single operator model led by Play Alberta.

The move is expected to attract many of the industry's biggest brands, with operators looking to establish themselves in what is widely seen as one of North America's most promising regulated gaming markets.

Alberta Opens Its Doors to Private Operators

Today's launch follows months of preparation by the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) and licensed operators.

Companies that completed the province's registration process are now able to offer online sportsbooks and casino platforms to eligible players in Alberta. The new model is designed to provide consumers with more choice while bringing activity from offshore sites into a more regulated environment.

The province has said the updated framework places a strong emphasis on consumer protection, responsible gambling and regulatory oversight while encouraging competition among licensed operators.

Canada's Second Competitive iGaming Market

Until today, Play Alberta was the province's only regulated online gambling platform. The new framework allows private operators to compete alongside the government run platform, following a model similar to Ontario's regulated market, which launched in 2022.

Industry observers will be watching closely to see how Alberta performs as operators begin rolling out their products and competing for market share. The province is home to more than four million residents, making it one of Canada's largest regulated gaming opportunities.

Industry Looks Ahead

Alberta's launch is expected to be closely watched by operators, suppliers and regulators across North America. Several major sportsbook and casino brands have already confirmed plans to enter the market, with competition expected to increase as more companies complete the licensing process.

For operators, the province offers another opportunity to grow within a fully regulated market. For players, today's launch provides access to a wider range of licensed betting and gaming options while also maintaining provincial consumer protection standards.

A Milestone for Canada's Gaming Industry

The launch represents another important step in the evolution of Canada's online gaming sector.

Ontario's regulated market has already demonstrated strong demand for licensed online gaming, and Alberta is now hoping to build on that success with its own competitive framework.

As operators begin welcoming customers today, attention will quickly turn to how the market develops over the coming months and whether other Canadian provinces decide to follow a similar route.
