ByteDance sells MLBB publisher Moonton in $6 billion deal with Savvy Games Group
ByteDance is exiting gaming with the $6 billion sale of Moonton to Savvy Games Group

ByteDance is stepping away from one of mobile gaming’s biggest name. The company has agreed to sell Moonton, the studio behind Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, to Savvy Games Group in a deal worth around $6 billion.
It is a clean exit for ByteDance and a very strategic pickup for Savvy.
ByteDance moves on from gaming
ByteDance bought Moonton back in 2021 for roughly $4 billion as part of its push into gaming. At the time, it looked like the company wanted to build a serious presence in the industry.
That direction has shifted.
In the past year, ByteDance has scaled back its gaming ambitions and focused more on AI and core tech. Selling Moonton now lets the company walk away with a profit while cutting down on a sector it no longer prioritizes.
A big play for Savvy
For Savvy Games Group, this is exactly the kind of asset they have been targeting.
Moonton is not just any studio. It runs one of the biggest mobile esports ecosystems in the world, especially in Southeast Asia where Mobile Legends continues to dominate.
This is where the timing gets interesting.
Saudi Arabia is already heavily invested in esports through events like the Esports World Cup, which is set to feature multiple top titles and massive prize pools. While MLBB has not always been a core title in global events outside Asia, owning Moonton gives Savvy the option to change that.
They now control the game, the publisher, and the esports ecosystem behind it.
That kind of control makes it much easier to align MLBB with bigger international plans, including potential inclusion or expansion within events tied to Saudi-backed initiatives.
What changes for MLBB
For now, not much is expected to change on the surface.
Moonton will continue operating with the same leadership, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang will keep its regular updates and existing esports structure. Regional leagues and international events should remain stable in the short term.
The difference is what happens behind the scenes.
With Savvy’s backing, there is more room for bigger investments, especially when it comes to global exposure. MLBB is already huge in regions like the Philippines and Indonesia. The next step has always been expanding its reach further.
The bigger picture
For Mobile Legends, this could be more than just a change in ownership. With Saudi Arabia pushing hard into esports through events like the Esports World Cup, the pieces are there for MLBB to grow beyond its current regions.
Nothing changes overnight. But this move gives the game a clearer path to a bigger global stage.
