How Esports Nations Cup 2026 Wildcard Slots Will Work

The Esports Foundation has revealed more details on the wildcard qualification system for Esports Nations Cup 2026, including how Solidarity Slots and Host Region Slots will be awarded.

How ENC 2026 Wildcard Work

The Esports Foundation has revealed additional details about the wildcard qualification system for the Esports Nations Cup 2026, giving developing esports regions another pathway into the tournament ahead of its inaugural edition later this year.

The wildcard structure is part of the Foundation’s broader effort to expand participation beyond traditional powerhouse regions. While most national teams will qualify through standard regional competitions, the new system introduces alternative routes for countries that may not consistently compete at the highest level across multiple esports titles.

The Foundation recently confirmed the introduction of Solidarity Slots, Host Region Slots, and Special Invites as part of the ENC qualification framework. Together, these mechanisms are designed to increase representation while still maintaining a competitive qualification process.

What Are Solidarity Slots?

Solidarity Slots will serve as the primary wildcard system for developing esports nations.

Under the framework outlined by the Foundation, countries that fail to qualify through standard regional pathways may still apply for entry in a title where they have demonstrated competitive potential. Rather than requiring a nation to perform consistently across multiple games, the system allows teams to focus on their strongest esport.

Applications for Solidarity Slots are scheduled to open on July 20 and close on August 17. Final selections will take place after the conclusion of regional qualifiers.

The Foundation has indicated that applications will be evaluated using competitive performance, regional representation, and the overall development of a nation's esports ecosystem. Exact selection criteria have not yet been fully detailed.

The approach differs from traditional wildcard systems used in many international esports tournaments, where additional slots are often awarded solely based on competitive rankings. Instead, the ENC framework appears designed to balance competitive integrity with broader international participation.

Host Region Slots Will Operate Differently

The Foundation also confirmed that Host Region Slots will be available for the inaugural edition of the Esports Nations Cup. However, the system will not function as a standard automatic qualification process.

Rather than guaranteeing a single host nation a direct place in the tournament, the slot will be distributed across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries through a merit-based qualification process. This means nations within the host region will still need to compete for placement rather than receiving automatic entry.

The decision reflects the Foundation’s attempt to avoid heavily favoring host countries while still ensuring regional representation within the tournament structure.

Part of a Larger ENC Expansion Strategy

The wildcard announcement follows several recent updates surrounding the Esports Nations Cup as the Foundation continues building the event ahead of its November launch.

As previously covered by UMG Gaming, the Foundation recently expanded qualification access for developing esports nations while also reaffirming that the ENC remains scheduled to take place in Riyadh despite speculation following the Esports World Cup’s move to Paris.

The national team-based competition remains one of the Foundation’s largest projects to date. Unlike most major esports tournaments, which revolve around organizations and club systems, the ENC will feature players representing their countries directly across multiple titles.

Games currently confirmed for the event include Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, League of Legends, Valorant, EA Sports FC, PUBG, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and several other esports titles.

The wildcard system ultimately gives the Foundation additional flexibility when building the tournament field while providing developing regions a realistic opportunity to participate in the ENC's first edition.
