Illinois Governor Banked $1.4M in Casino Winnings

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker beat the house and claimed $1.4 million in winnings after playing at a Las Vegas casino last year, based on his recent tax filings. Pritzker, the current governor of Illinois, reportedly claimed the windfall after playing blackjack while on a holiday with his wife and friends. 

The two-term Democrat is a billionaire, with a net worth of $3.9 billion per Forbes, and heir to the Hyatt Hotel fortune. According to a campaign spokesperson, Pritzker will be donating the winnings to charity.

A Rewarding Vacation to Remember for Gov. Pritzker

Speaking at a press conference, Gov. Pritzker shared his experience playing at Las Vegas. He described his win at the blackjack table as “incredibly lucky”, saying that “You have to be [lucky] to end up ahead, frankly, going to a casino anywhere”.

According to his campaign, the governor also loved playing poker and even founded a charity poker tournament. The campaign also shared with CBS that the governor plans to donate the winnings to charity, but did not respond when asked why they had not already done so. Based on the latest filings, Governor Pritzker and his wife, MK, reported a total income of $10.6 million last year.

What Gov. Pritzker’s Win Means to the Campaign and the Broader Sweepstakes Casino Industry

The news of his tax filing and winnings from the blackjack table comes as Pritzker has increasingly boosted his profile as a top White House critic. He’s currently locked in a fight with President Donald Trump, as immigration agents carried out operations, making dozens of arrests in Chicago and other areas. Governor Pritzker has criticized this policy, calling President Trump’s action authoritarian.

In addition to his love for casual card play, Pritzker has also joined the gaming industry in recent years. A billionaire and an heir to the Hyatt family inheritance, he has expanded gambling operations in the state since taking office, authorizing new casinos and legalizing sports betting.  

The operations of sweepstakes casinos are also legal in Illinois, provided operators operate using a dual-currency model with Gold Coins (GCs) and Sweeps Coins (SCs). 

The governor is a possible contender for the Democratic nomination for the 2028 elections and has actively opposed some of President Trump’s policies.
