Lawmakers Push Back Against Gambling Platforms Over Concerns About Minors

Lawmakers are increasing pressure on gambling and esports betting platforms over concerns surrounding minors and online advertising exposure.

Lawmakers Push Back Against Gambling Platforms Over Concerns About Minors

Concerns surrounding gambling exposure among younger audiences continue growing across esports and online gaming after five US lawmakers sent letters to major betting and prediction market companies demanding answers regarding advertising practices aimed at young users.

The letter was addressed to companies including DraftKings, FanDuel, bet365, BetMGM, Kalshi, Polymarket, PrizePicks, Caesars, and Robinhood. Lawmakers stated they were particularly concerned about the “normalization” of online gambling among younger demographics, especially through social media campaigns and influencer-driven advertising.

According to the lawmakers, prediction markets and betting platforms have become increasingly visible to younger audiences through TikTok, YouTube, livestreaming content, and sports-related media partnerships. Several platforms now also offer esports-related markets alongside traditional sports betting options.

Gambling Concerns Continue Growing Around Younger Audiences

One of the major concerns raised in the letter involves how easily gambling-style content reaches younger users online.

The lawmakers cited research showing that men aged 18 to 24 are significantly more likely to use prediction markets, sportsbooks, or fantasy betting platforms compared to the general public. Another report referenced in the discussion claimed that one in three American boys between 11 and 17 years old have encountered gambling-related activity, with gaming platforms often serving as the first point of exposure. That concern is not limited to the United States.

Several countries and regulators have recently started discussing stricter controls involving gambling ads, esports betting, loot boxes, and online gaming systems connected to minors. California lawmakers recently proposed legislation that would restrict gambling-style advertising targeting users under 18 while also requiring stronger age verification systems for betting platforms.

Lawmakers and regulators have also started increasing scrutiny toward online gaming and gambling systems involving younger users. Discussions around stronger age verification, online safety, and restrictions tied to gambling-like mechanics have continued appearing throughout 2026.

Esports Continues Facing Gambling Debate

The issue has also become more visible across esports itself. Over the last few years, esports broadcasts, organizations, and tournament operators have increasingly partnered with betting companies as sponsorship opportunities within the industry expanded. Counter-Strike in particular has seen heavy integration of betting advertisements across tournaments, broadcasts, and livestream segments. That growing presence has sparked criticism from parts of the community.

Recent discussions surrounding events sponsored by prediction market platforms and sportsbooks showed many viewers expressing concern about how heavily gambling promotions are becoming integrated into esports broadcasts, especially in games with younger audiences.

Some community members also worry that the rapid expansion of esports betting could eventually create larger integrity risks involving match-fixing and underage gambling exposure.

Industry Pressure Around Regulation Continues Increasing

Despite the criticism, betting partnerships remain financially important for many esports organizations and tournament operators.

As sponsorship markets become more competitive, gambling and prediction market companies continue investing heavily into sports and esports partnerships. That financial growth has also increased pressure on regulators to introduce stronger protections involving age verification, advertising standards, and responsible gambling systems.

For now, lawmakers are demanding clearer answers from gambling companies regarding how their platforms market to younger audiences and what safeguards currently exist to prevent underage exposure.

The broader debate around esports, online gaming, and gambling is unlikely to disappear anytime soon, especially as prediction markets and betting systems continue expanding across digital entertainment.
