Massachusetts Hits a Record $892.2 Million Total Handle for October 2025
The state’s sports betting industry hits its stride, banking almost $900 million in total amount wagered

Nearly a year after Governor Charlie Baker legalized sports betting, Massachusetts has hit its stride. According to data shared by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), the state banked a record-breaking total handle of $655.1 million (total amount wagered).
October’s numbers beat September’s record of $800.3 million, setting up for a strong 2025 run. Massachusetts is currently ranked 4th among US states, with New York holding the record total handle at $2.65 billion.
With its competitive market dominated by BetMGM, DraftKings, and Caesars and the looming NFL postseason, the state’s annual handle could hit record levels.
Massachusetts Joins the Big League

The state racked up $892.2 million in total handle, up 19.3% from October 2024, and shows a 36.3% improvement from the previous month. Online and mobile betting dominated the revenues, cornering 98.6% of the total market, which translates to $879.6 million. October 2025’s revenues translate to a Gross Gaming Revenue or GGR of $71.3 million.
For context, Massachusetts collected $7.4 billion in total handle for all of 2024. According to some projections, the state is on track to exceed $8 billion this year, fueled by the growing popularity of sports betting and support for NBA teams like the Celtics.
Nationally, Massachusetts is in 4th place among US states, trailing Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. Here’s a rundown of the top 5 US states for October 2025:
- New York. $2.billion
- New Jersey. $1.24 billion
- Pennsylvania. $968.5 million
- Massachusetts. $892.2 million
- North Carolina. $811.4 million.
So What’s Fueling the Sports Betting Boom?

Sports betting has been legal since January 2023 (for retail) and March 2023 (online), with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) in charge of regulations. Although there are bans and plans for broader restrictions, sports betting, together with sweepstakes casinos, remains a popular leisure activity. Here’s a quick look at the top reasons driving the industry:
- Digital dominance. Local bettors prefer placing bets via apps.
- NFL season kickoff. High-profile teams and playoff matches drove betting volume.
- Local sports fever. Boston-area teams receive more attention and bets, including a high volume of wagers on the Celtics.
- Competitive market. Massachusetts plays host to at least seven licensed operators offering robust bonuses and competitive odds for markets.
Looking ahead, the state is counting on sustained growth into the last two months of the year. With the help of top betting operators, the NFL postseason, and the growth of tech-savvy bettors, the state’s annual handle can top last year’s records.
As the state continues to reap the rewards of a growing betting industry, MGC has repeatedly issued calls and reminders for players to bet responsibly.
