MGC Formally Launches Legal Sports Betting, Unveils Strict Eligibility Requirements
MGC launches legal sports betting with strict eligibility rules, emphasizing responsible gambling, player protection, and economic benefits for the state’s new market.

Legal sports betting is now live in Missouri, effective 12 a.m. on December 1st, 2025, making it the 39th state to do so. The state’s push for sports betting has come a long way, culminating in a razor-thin vote to pass Amendment 2 on November 5th, 2024.
Six national operators, including DraftKings and BetMGM, launched simultaneously, setting up one of the most competitive opening-day markets among recent state openings.
As players and operators welcome legal sports betting with much fanfare, the state’s regulator has issued a stern reminder. In a press release dated December 1st, Missouri Gaming Commission reminded players about the strict eligibility requirements, while reiterating its call for responsible gambling.
Prepare Yourself: Watch Out for Missouri’s Tough Eligibility Rules

As indicated in Amendment 2, the Missouri Gaming Commission (MGC) acts as the chief regulator of the state’s regulated sports betting scene. MGC worked overtime into launch, drafting and institutionalizing rules, approving license applications, and ensuring operators met responsible gambling requirements.
On December 1st, at 12:00 a.m., MGC led the official launch of the legal sports betting scene, partnering with other state authorities.
In a press release, Chairman Jan Zimmerman of MGC shared the team’s satisfaction with this development. Zimmerman added that this launch “will create new jobs, increase tax revenue, and further enhance education in our great state”.
The same December 1st press release also specified the strict eligibility rules and requirements, as detailed below:
- Interested players must be at least 21 years of age
- Players must be physically present in the state
- Each licensee must comply with Responsible Gambling and self-exclusion tools
Legal sports betting: a win-win for the state’s economy
Opening the state’s doors to legal sports betting doesn’t just benefit operators and avid sports fans and bettors. It also revitalizes the economy, says its proponents. MGC’s Zimmerman shared that this new industry will “create new jobs, increase tax revenue, and further enhance education in our great state”.
He added that he’s incredibly proud of the MGC staff for their hardwork and the commitment to ensuring the success of the launch.
