Nebraska Casino Owners Lead Petition for 2026 Online Betting Vote

State Could Let Voters Decide on Mobile Sports Betting

Casino operators in Nebraska are behind a new petition effort that could bring online sports betting to a public vote in 2026.

The campaign follows approval of two key petitions, allowing organizers to begin collecting signatures across the state. If successful, the issue of legalizing mobile betting will be placed on the 2026 general election ballot, giving voters the final say.

Push to Expand Beyond In-Person Betting

Right now, sports betting is legal in Nebraska, but only at physical casino locations. Players must visit a licensed venue to place a bet, with no option for mobile wagering.

Supporters of the petition, including casino operators, argue that this system is now outdated. They say many residents already travel to neighboring states like Iowa or Colorado to place bets on their phones, sending potential revenue out of Nebraska. The proposed change would allow online betting platforms to operate in partnership with licensed casinos, helping keep that spending within the state.

Two-Part Plan for Legalization

The effort includes two separate petitions. One would amend the state constitution to allow online sports betting, while the other would set out the rules for how the market would operate.

To move forward, organizers must collect thousands of signatures by a July deadline. The constitutional amendment requires support from around 10% of registered voters, while the second measure needs about 7%, along with a solid amount of support across multiple counties. If both measures qualify, Nebraska voters will decide whether to expand sports betting beyond physical casinos.

What This Means for the Market

If approved, the proposal would mark a major shift for Nebraska’s gaming landscape. Online betting would open the door to a more modern market, similar to what has already been introduced in many other U.S. states.

The plan also includes safeguards, such as requiring betting platforms to partner with local casinos and operate under the authority of the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission. For operators, the vote represents a key opportunity to grow the market. For lawmakers, it’s a chance to let voters decide how far the state should go in expanding gambling.

Looking Ahead to 2026

The focus now shifts to maintaining enough support to get the proposal on the ballot. If the campaign succeeds, Nebraska residents will face a clear choice in 2026 that is either keeping betting limited to casinos or allow wagering on mobile devices statewide. As more states continue to expand digital betting, Nebraska’s upcoming vote could play an important role in shaping the future of gaming in the region.
