VALORANT Champions Tour 2027 Introduces Open Circuit And Tournament-First Format

VCT is changing in 2027. Riot is moving away from long leagues and opening the door for more teams through a tournament-based system.

VALORANT Champions Tour 2027 Introduces Open Circuit And Tournament-First Format

Riot Games has outlined major changes to the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT), with a new format set to launch in 2027. The update shifts the circuit away from its current league-heavy structure and toward a system built around tournaments and open qualification.

The goal is to create a more competitive and accessible ecosystem, where more teams have a path to the top level.

Shift Toward A Tournament-Driven Season

The VCT calendar will move away from long league splits and instead focus on a series of tournaments held throughout the year.

Riot plans to host more than 20 events across multiple regions. These tournaments will carry direct implications for international qualification, making each one more meaningful compared to regular season matches under the current system.

The result is a tighter schedule with more matches that directly impact progression.

Open Circuit Expands Access

One of the biggest changes is the introduction of an open circuit.

Teams outside the partnership system will have multiple ways to qualify for top-tier events such as Masters and Champions. These pathways include Premier, third-party tournaments, and other competitive systems tied into the VCT structure.

This removes some of the limitations seen in the current format, where non-partnered teams had fewer opportunities to reach international competition.

VCT Cups As The Main Qualification Path

Riot will introduce VCT Cups as the primary route to global events.

Each region will host several Cups during the season. Performance in these tournaments will determine which teams advance to Masters and Champions.

These events will largely replace traditional league play, putting more focus on short, high-stakes competition rather than extended regular seasons.

Partnership Model Remains In Place

The partnership system will continue into 2027, but with a reduced gap between partnered and non-partnered teams.

Partnered organizations will still receive financial support, including stipends and revenue from in-game team content. They will also benefit from favorable seeding in tournaments.

However, strong performances in open events can allow non-partnered teams to reach the same international stages, making the system more competitive overall.

Increased Financial Support Across The Circuit

Riot is also expanding financial support within the ecosystem.

Prize pools will be distributed across multiple events, and teams will earn for qualifying, not just for winning. Travel costs for international tournaments will continue to be covered.

These changes are aimed at helping more teams sustain participation throughout the season, not just those at the very top.

A More Competitive And Flexible Structure

The 2027 format reflects a broader shift in how VALORANT esports is structured.

For teams, the system places greater emphasis on consistent performance across multiple events. For fans, it offers more high-stakes matches and a wider range of tournaments to follow.

The move to an open, tournament-focused circuit brings VALORANT closer to a hybrid model, combining elements of franchised stability with a more accessible competitive pathway.
