Hedgehog Markets UMG

Hedgehog Markets launched in 2021 as the first prediction market platform to go live on the Solana blockchain. The pitch was simple to take everything people liked about prediction markets and rebuild it on the fastest and cheapest blockchain available at the time. Solana's 400 millisecond block times and near zero transaction fees of around $0.001 per trade meant that the gas cost and speed friction that troubled Ethereum based competitors essentially disappeared.

The result was a platform where creating a market, placing a bet, and settling an outcome could all happen in seconds rather than minutes or hours. The platform has two distinct products sitting under the same roof. Classic markets are the standard prediction market experience such as Yes/No binary contracts on questions with a defined resolution date, traded through a pooled liquidity model rather than a traditional order book.

Versus is the newer and more experimental side of the platform, a peer to peer betting exchange where you post your own odds, set your own stake, and wait for another user to take the other side of your position. Both products are accessible through a single wallet connection with no account creation and no KYC.Hedgehog is not trying to compete with Kalshi on regulatory standing or with Polymarket on volume. It is building for a specific kind of user: someone already inside the Solana ecosystem who wants to trade on any event they care about, at odds they set themselves, without going through a centralised platform to do it.

What Happens When You Connect Your Wallet

Hedgehog Markets UMG

Getting started on Hedgehog Markets is about as simple as on-chain trading gets. You visit the site, connect a compatible Solana wallet such as Phantom, Solflare, or Backpack, and you are inside the platform with no account creation, no email, and no government ID required. If you have SOL or USDC in your wallet you are ready to trade immediately. The platform has two separate sections. The Classic section is the traditional prediction market experience. You browse available markets organised by category, find a question you want to trade on, and buy Yes or No shares at the current price. Prices sit between $0.01 and $0.99 and reflect what the market collectively thinks the probability of the outcome is.

If you buy Yes at $0.65 and the event resolves correctly, you collect $1 per share, a $0.35 profit. If you are wrong the share expires at $0.The Versus section works differently. Rather than buying into an existing market at a posted price, you post your own bet with your own odds. You set how much you want to stake, choose your odds from three preset options of 1:5, 1:1, or 5:1, pick your outcome, and set an expiration date. Your offer then sits in an open order book visible to other users. If someone on the other side agrees to take you on, the bet is matched and locked into a smart contract. The funds from both sides go into Smart contract escrow and settle automatically when the market resolves. This peer to peer structure means you are never trading against the platform or against a liquidity pool. You are trading against a specific person who saw your odds and chose to take the other side.

That creates a genuinely different dynamic from both traditional sportsbooks and standard prediction markets, giving you control over the price you trade at rather than accepting whatever the market is currently offering. Gas fees on Solana are handled automatically at a cost of around $0.001 per transaction, effectively invisible. There are no withdrawal fees since payouts go directly to your connected wallet when contracts settle. Resolution on Classic markets uses designated resolution sources defined when the market is created. Versus markets resolve based on the outcome both sides agreed to at the time of matching.

The Story Behind the Platform

Hedgehog Markets was founded by George Yu and is operated through Futarchy Research Limited, a Gibraltar registered company. The platform is headquartered with operational ties to New York. It raised $3.5 million in seed funding in July 2021 from investors including Reciprocal Ventures, Republic Labs, Alameda Research, Divergence Ventures, MGNR, and Manna, and also received a grant from the Solana Foundation. Kyle DiPeppe serves as CEO and has been the primary public voice for the platform in podcasts and industry discussions. The platform launched on Solana mainnet in 2021 as the first prediction market to do so, and has since expanded to also support Eclipse, an Ethereum Layer 2 network built on the Solana Virtual Machine. The platform is small by industry standards with a team of around three to five people, operating as a lean on-chain protocol rather than a large consumer product company.

Two Products, One Platform, Endless Markets

Classic Markets

Classic is the standard Hedgehog prediction market product. Markets are created by users or by the Hedgehog team and cover crypto prices, sports outcomes, political events, technology milestones, and anything else someone has chosen to create a market around. Each market has a resolution date and a designated resolution source. Trading uses a pooled liquidity model inspired by automated market maker designs, meaning liquidity is available on both sides of most markets without needing a matching counterparty for every trade.

Prices move based on trading activity. The more people buy Yes, the higher the Yes price goes and the lower No becomes, and vice versa. You can exit a Classic market position before resolution by selling your shares back into the pool at the current price, locking in profit if things moved your way or cutting a loss if they did not.

Versus Markets

Versus is Hedgehog's peer to peer betting exchange and the product the platform is currently putting most of its energy into. The mechanics are deliberately different from Classic. You set your own odds from three options: 1:5 meaning you risk five to win one, 1:1 meaning even odds, or 5:1 meaning you risk one to win five. You pick your outcome, enter your stake, set how long your offer is open, and post it to the market.

Other users browsing the Versus section can see your open offer. If they like the odds and believe the opposite outcome will happen, they take your bet. Both stakes go into an on-chain smart contract. When the event resolves, the winning side gets both stakes released from the contract directly to their wallet.
The flexibility to choose your own odds rather than accepting the current market price gives sharp traders a meaningful edge. If you think the market is mispriced and want to bet at better terms than what is currently on offer, Versus lets you do that rather than forcing you to accept an unfavourable price to get matched.

User Created Markets

Since Hedgehog is permissionless, any user can create a market on any question with a clear resolution date and outcome. You define the question, choose a resolution source, set the end date, and the market goes live. This means the platform's catalog is theoretically unlimited, constrained only by what users choose to create and what liquidity flows into those markets. In practice, user-created markets vary widely in quality and liquidity, with some generating meaningful activity and others sitting empty.

What Makes Hedgehog Different

The combination of two distinct trading models under one roof is the most unusual feature of the platform. Most prediction markets make a single structural choice: order book or AMM, peer to peer or pooled. Hedgehog offers both simultaneously, letting users choose the model that suits their trading style on any given market. The speed and cost of Solana is the other meaningful differentiator. Transactions confirming in under half a second at a cost of a fraction of a cent means the friction of on-chain trading essentially disappears. For a platform built entirely on permissionless blockchain infrastructure, that speed is crucial to making the experience feel responsive rather than slow.

What Is Getting Traded

Most Active Markets

Based on platform data and category activity, Hedgehog's most engaged markets in 2026 have included:

  • Crypto price milestone contracts on Bitcoin, Solana, and Ethereum
  • Sports outcome markets on major U.S. and international competitions
  • Political event contracts around elections and legislative outcomes
  • Technology milestone contracts around AI developments and protocol launches
  • User created custom markets on Solana ecosystem events

Where Activity Is Strongest

Crypto markets are consistently the most active category, which makes sense given the platform's audience. Users who are already inside the Solana ecosystem are naturally focused on crypto prices and protocol events. Sports markets have built a following particularly in the Versus section where peer to peer odds setting works well for game outcome bets. Politics draws users who want to trade on major election cycles.

What Moves Fastest

Prices shift most around:

  • Major crypto price moves during active trading sessions
  • Sports events on game days
  • Breaking political news during election cycles
  • Protocol announcements and token launches in the Solana ecosystem

What It Costs to Use

Classic Market Fees

Hedgehog charges approximately 1% on Classic market trades. This fee covers the platform's operational costs and is applied to the value of shares bought or sold. For most retail sized trades this works out to a small absolute amount. The pooled liquidity model means there is also an implicit spread cost that varies depending on how much liquidity is in a given market.

Versus Market Fees

Versus markets charge no platform fee beyond the standard Solana gas cost of approximately $0.001 per transaction. The only cost of placing a peer to peer bet on Versus is the network transaction fee, which is negligible. That makes Versus one of the cheapest ways to trade binary outcome contracts of any platform in this series on a pure fee basis.

Gas Fees

Solana gas fees run at approximately $0.001 per transaction, effectively rounding to zero in practical terms. This is one of the most significant cost advantages Hedgehog has over Ethereum-based competitors where gas can represent a meaningful portion of a small trade's total cost.

No Withdrawal Fees

Payouts go directly to your connected wallet on-chain when contracts settle. There are no withdrawal fees, no withdrawal waiting periods, and no manual processing. The smart contract releases funds automatically when the resolution condition is met.

No Welcome Bonus

Hedgehog does not offer a traditional welcome bonus or promotional credits. Periodic on-chain reward programs and participation incentives have run at various points in the platform's history, but there is no standing sign-up offer comparable to what consumer prediction market platforms provide.

What Works and What Needs Work

What Works

  • Fully permissionless: on any user can create a market on any topic with no approval required
  • Versus mode lets you set your own odds rather than accepting market price
  • No KYC requirement, connect a wallet and trade immediately
  • Solana's speed and near zero gas fees make the on-chain experience genuinely smooth
  • Both pooled liquidity Classic markets and peer to peer Versus markets available under one roof
  • Eclipse integration extends the platform to a second blockchain network
  • No withdrawal fees, payouts go directly to your wallet on chain
  • No loss market model available for certain competitions, removes risk of losing principal
  • Permissionless market creation means unlimited possible topics
  • Developer friendly with comprehensive documentation for builders who want to integrate or build on the protocol

What Needs Work

  • Volume is thin, under $100,000 daily, well below every other platform reviewed in this series
  • Very small team of around three to five people, limiting development pace and support capacity
  • Not available to U.S. users under regulatory guidance
  • Requires a Solana wallet and USDC or SOL, a meaningful barrier for non-crypto users
  • User created markets vary significantly in quality and many sit with little to no liquidity
  • No dedicated mobile app, web browser only
  • Alameda Research was among the original investors, a name that carries significant reputational baggage following the FTX collapse
  • No formal consumer protections given unregulated decentralised status
  • Customer support is minimal given the small team size
  • The platform has been relatively quiet in terms of major updates and growth compared to the rapid expansion of competitors

Volume and Liquidity

Hedgehog Markets processes under $100,000 in daily trading volume, making it one of the smaller platforms by volume in this series. That number puts it well behind Polymarket, Kalshi, and even newer entrants like Limitless Exchange. The thin volume reflects both the platform's small team and the relatively early stage of adoption for on-chain prediction markets on Solana outside of major event cycles.

Liquidity varies dramatically by market. Popular crypto price markets and major sports events on game days attract meaningful participation. User-created markets on niche topics can sit with essentially no trading activity. The pooled liquidity model in Classic helps maintain some depth on both sides of more active markets, but in practice the experience on quieter markets can involve wide spreads and limited ability to move size without materially affecting the price.

Versus liquidity depends entirely on whether another user wants to take the other side of your bet. On popular events this tends to happen reasonably quickly. On unusual topics or at unfavourable odds, your offer may sit unmatched. The peer to peer model's strength, that you are setting your own price, is also its limitation: if nobody agrees with your odds, you simply do not get matched.

The Solana Foundation grant and the platform's integration with the Solana ecosystem give it access to a large and active crypto community that does not exist in the same form for Ethereum-based or centralised competitors. As Solana's user base has grown significantly through 2025 and 2026, platforms built natively on Solana have a distribution advantage within that community that is worth noting even if it has not yet translated into large trading volumes for Hedgehog specifically.

Who Can Use It and What the Law Says

Regulatory Status

Hedgehog Markets is an unregulated decentralised protocol. It operates through Futarchy Research Limited, a Gibraltar registered company, and has no CFTC registration, no DCM licence, and no formal regulatory oversight by any U.S. agency. The smart contracts that power the platform are open and auditable, but there is no regulatory body overseeing how markets are created, resolved, or settled.

U.S. Availability

U.S. users are restricted from the platform under the company's regulatory guidance. The platform does not have formal geographic blocking in the same way that some centralised platforms enforce, but U.S. users who access it are outside the platform's terms of service and have no consumer protections.

Global Availability

Outside the United States, Hedgehog is accessible globally to users with compatible Solana wallets. Local regulations in any given country apply to individual users and Hedgehog does not provide legal guidance on jurisdiction-specific rules.

No Consumer Protections

Being unregulated means there is no formal protection framework for users. Smart contract audits provide some technical assurance that the mechanics work as described, but there is no regulatory authority to appeal to if something goes wrong. This is a meaningful difference from every regulated platform reviewed in this series.

Reputation, Funding, and the Alameda Question

A Pioneer With a Small Profile

Hedgehog Markets was the first prediction market to launch on Solana mainnet and has been operating for longer than most competitors in this series. That pioneering status gives it credibility within the Solana ecosystem but has not translated into the mainstream visibility or volume growth that later entrants with larger teams and more capital have achieved.

The Alameda Investor

Alameda Research, the trading firm at the centre of the FTX collapse, was among the original seed investors in Hedgehog Markets. That association has created reputational questions for the platform that are worth acknowledging directly. Hedgehog has not been implicated in any wrongdoing related to the FTX situation, and the platform has continued operating through and after the collapse. But the investor connection is a fact that some users factor into their assessment of the platform's credibility.

Kyle DiPeppe's Vision

CEO Kyle DiPeppe has been vocal in public discussions about the future of prediction markets, arguing that on-chain permissionless platforms represent a fundamentally different and more open model than centralised regulated exchanges. His view is that the ability for anyone to create a market on anything, without needing a central authority to approve it, is the defining feature that makes decentralised prediction markets meaningfully different from their regulated counterparts. Whether that vision translates into mainstream adoption remains an open question in 2026.

Community

Hedgehog has an active community on Discord and X/Twitter built around the Solana ecosystem. The community skews toward crypto native users who are already familiar with DeFi and on-chain trading. Discussion covers new markets, platform updates, and predictions around Solana ecosystem events. The community is smaller but more technically engaged than the communities around consumer-facing regulated platforms.

How It Sits Against the Competition

Platform Key Difference
Polymarket Global leader in on-chain prediction markets, far deeper liquidity, Polygon-based rather than Solana
Limitless Exchange Also unregulated and crypto-native, built on Base rather than Solana, higher volume
Kalshi Also unregulated and crypto native, built on Base rather than Solana, higher volume
Manifold Markets Play money only, no real money trading, social forecasting model
ProphetX Sports peer to peer exchange, sweepstakes model, available to U.S. users

Hedgehog sits closest to Limitless Exchange in terms of model and regulatory approach. The key differences are that Hedgehog is built on Solana rather than Base, has been operating for longer, has significantly lower volume, and offers the unique Versus peer to peer betting exchange model that no direct competitor currently replicates.

Should You Use Hedgehog Markets?

Hedgehog Markets is a genuinely interesting platform for a specific audience. If you are already inside the Solana ecosystem, already comfortable with crypto wallets and on chain trading, and want to trade prediction markets without going through a centralised exchange, Hedgehog delivers that experience cleanly and cheaply. The Versus mode in particular is worth trying if you have ever felt frustrated by accepting unfavourable prices on existing platforms and wanted to set your own terms instead.

The honest picture is that volume is thin, the team is small, and the platform is operating at a scale that is well below the leading platforms in this space. Liquidity on anything other than the most popular markets can be sparse. User created markets range from genuinely interesting to completely empty. The no-loss model is a creative concept but is not the platform's primary product today.

For U.S. users, Hedgehog is not available. For everyone else, it is worth having alongside a larger platform rather than as a primary trading venue. Use it for the markets Kalshi and Polymarket do not list, for the permissionless Versus trades at odds you set yourself, and for the fast and cheap Solana-native experience that on-chain trading on Ethereum-based platforms cannot match.

Works well for: Solana ecosystem users who want on-chain prediction markets without KYC, traders who want to set their own odds through Versus rather than accepting market prices, anyone who wants to create a market on a topic no centralised platform would approve, DeFi users comfortable with wallet-based trading who want near-zero gas costs.

Probably not the right fit for: U.S. users for whom the platform is not available, anyone without an existing crypto wallet and USDC, traders who need deep liquidity on anything outside the most popular markets, users who want formal consumer protections from a regulated exchange, anyone looking for a mobile app or a traditional welcome bonus.

⭐ Overall Rating: 6.6 / 10

A genuinely original on-chain prediction market with a unique peer to peer betting mode, held back by thin volume and a small team that has not yet matched the platform's early pioneering ambition.
