Dota 2's Dark Carnival Is Finally Here After Days of Teasing
The new Dota 2 event introduces a story-driven adventure, five Automaton Personas, Candyworks, Treasure of Wonders, and plenty of rewards for players to unlock over the coming weeks.

Earlier this week, Dota 2 players logged in to find one of the game's oldest heroes had simply vanished. Axe disappeared from nearly every game mode, his portrait was replaced with a missing poster, and Valve refused to explain why. Instead, the developer let the community do what it does best, digging through patch notes, client files, and every cryptic clue it could find.
It turns out those theories were right.
Valve has officially launched Dark Carnival, Dota 2's first major narrative event since Crownfall. The update puts Ringmaster front and center in a brand-new story, introduces five Automaton Personas, brings back Candyworks, and packs in enough rewards and secrets to keep players busy over the coming weeks.
Ringmaster's Carnival Has Arrived

Dark Carnival follows Hoodwink and Legion Commander after the pair find themselves trapped aboard Ringmaster's mechanical train. The story, titled Midnight Run, has players helping the unlikely duo escape while Ringmaster taunts them at every stop along the way.
Rather than releasing everything at once, Valve is rolling out the event in three chapters. The first part is available now, while the second and third chapters will unlock in 14 and 28 days respectively, allowing the story to unfold throughout the event instead of being completed in a single weekend.
The reveal also answers one of the community's biggest questions from earlier this week. Axe's disappearance wasn't a random bug or an unfinished update. As many players suspected, he had become Ringmaster's first victim.
Five Heroes Receive New Automaton Personas

Axe isn't the only hero transformed by Ringmaster's experiments.
Dark Carnival introduces new Automaton Personas for Axe, Oracle, Morphling, Legion Commander, and Bristleback, giving each hero an entirely new mechanical appearance complete with fresh animations, visual effects, and voice work. They're among the most ambitious Personas Valve has released, especially for Morphling, whose aging character model has long been a point of discussion within the community.
The update also adds the Treasure of Wonders, featuring 20 new cosmetic sets inspired by the Dark Carnival theme. Between the Personas and the new treasure, it's one of the largest cosmetic drops Dota 2 has seen alongside a major event.

Playing Dark Carnival Feels Familiar, With a Few New Twists
Anyone who enjoyed Cavern Crawl will feel right at home.
Players don't need to queue for a separate game mode to participate. Simply playing regular Dota 2 matches earns event tickets, with different heroes rewarding different ticket types. Those tickets are then used to move Hoodwink and Legion Commander through Ringmaster's train, unlocking new story chapters, rewards, and additional paths as the journey progresses.
Valve has also added Secret Rooms, optional side areas hidden throughout the train that contain extra story content and rewards. Access requires the Secret Rooms Pack, which also includes the Dark Carnival Creeps, a themed Music Pack, and the tickets needed to unlock those hidden areas.
Candyworks also makes its return, giving players another chance to exchange candy for cosmetic rewards. Players can also collect Discount Coins during the event, which can be redeemed to reduce the cost of eligible purchases, including the Secret Rooms Pack.

A Worthy Follow-Up to Crownfall
Dark Carnival is the first large-scale event Dota 2 has received since Crownfall launched in April 2024, and it already feels like Valve has gone well beyond a simple seasonal update.
Between the story-driven progression, multiple chapters, new Personas, Treasure of Wonders, Candyworks, Secret Rooms, and the mystery Valve spent days building around Axe, the developer has delivered an event that feels much closer to Crownfall than many players expected.
The clues were there all along. The strange "Sense of Foreboding" modifier, Axe's disappearance, the datamined references to Dark Carnival, and Valve's playful trolling of dataminers all turned out to be pieces of a much larger reveal.
For once, the community wasn't reading too much into Valve's cryptic updates. Ringmaster really was inviting everyone to the carnival.
