IEM Returns to USA in 2027 as ESL Expands North American Presence

ESL FACEIT Group has confirmed the return of IEM USA in 2027, with 16 teams set to compete in a LAN event featuring arena playoffs and a live audience.

IEM Returns to USA

ESL FACEIT Group has confirmed that Intel Extreme Masters will return to the United States in 2027, giving North American Counter-Strike fans another top-tier event on the ESL Pro Tour calendar.

The announcement follows the success of IEM Atlanta earlier this year and marks the continuation of ESL's investment in the North American market. While the host city has not yet been revealed, the tournament is scheduled to take place from April 5-11, 2027, and will feature 16 teams competing on LAN. The playoffs will be held in front of a live audience.

ESL Reveals Format and Qualification Details

Unlike many tournament announcements that arrive with only basic information, ESL has already outlined much of the event structure.

The tournament will feature two double-elimination groups of eight teams, with the top four teams from each group advancing to an eight-team playoff bracket. Quarterfinals will be played on Friday, followed by semifinals on Saturday and a third-place match alongside the grand final on Sunday.

Team invitations will primarily be determined through Valve Regional Standings. Eleven spots will come from the Global VRS rankings, while North America and South America will each receive a direct regional invite. Three additional teams will qualify through closed qualifiers.

Another Major Stop on the 2027 ESL Calendar

IEM USA will be part of ESL's broader 2027 Counter-Strike circuit, which includes more than $11.45 million allocated across teams and players throughout the ESL Pro Tour season. ESL has also committed to arena playoffs for its premier events beginning in 2027, ensuring that every top-tier tournament concludes in front of a live crowd.

The return of IEM to the United States comes at a time when North American Counter-Strike is searching for renewed momentum. Teams such as NRG, Complexity, M80, and Liquid continue to represent the region internationally, while ESL has increasingly looked to North America as a destination for large-scale arena events.

For now, the biggest unanswered question is where the tournament will be held. ESL has confirmed the country, dates, format, and qualification process, but the host city remains under wraps. Further details are expected as the 2027 season approaches.
