Riot Games has officially revealed League Classic, a new game mode launching during Season 3 of 2026.

Riot Games is turning back the clock. The developer has officially announced League Classic, a new game mode arriving during Season 3 of 2026 that will let players experience League of Legends as it was more than a decade ago. Instead of simply bringing back old cosmetics or limited-time events, League Classic recreates an earlier version of the game, complete with its original map, champions, items, runes, and progression systems.

For longtime players, it's a chance to relive one of League's most nostalgic eras. For newer fans, it offers a glimpse into how the MOBA looked and played before years of champion reworks, gameplay updates, and visual overhauls.

What Is League Classic?

League Classic is Riot's answer to one of the community's longest-running requests: an official way to play old League of Legends.

The mode recreates the game as it existed on a specific patch from the early years of League. That means players won't just see the old Summoner's Rift. They'll also have access to classic items, runes, masteries, summoner progression, and original champion abilities that disappeared years ago.

Veteran players can once again build iconic items like Heart of Gold, stack multiple Sunfire Capes, and revisit gameplay mechanics that helped define League's early competitive scene.

Unlike previous rotating game modes, League Classic is designed to recreate the full experience of playing League during its earlier seasons rather than simply borrowing elements from the past.

Which Patch Will League Classic Use?

Riot has not officially revealed the exact patch that League Classic will use, but there are already strong hints.

Many players believe the mode will be based on early Season 3, one of the most celebrated periods in League of Legends history. Riot has yet to confirm that speculation, although the developer has revealed that every player will experience the same version of the game rather than selecting different patches.

Datamining from the Public Beta Environment also uncovered an early list of around 60 champions expected to appear in the mode. Riot later clarified that the leaked roster was incomplete, confirming that additional champions such as Graves and Urgot will also be included before launch.

One thing Riot has confirmed is that champions will use their original abilities, allowing players to revisit kits that disappeared following years of reworks and updates. Whether Riot plans to rebalance those champions or fix long-standing bugs remains unknown.

League Classic Releases During Season 3

League Classic is scheduled to launch sometime during Season 3 of 2026, which begins on July 22.

Riot has not announced an exact release date or how long the game mode will remain available. The developer is expected to share additional details ahead of the Mid-Season Invitational 2026 Grand Final on July 11, where more information about League Classic is expected to be revealed.

There are still several unanswered questions surrounding the mode. Riot has yet to explain whether League Classic will receive balance updates after launch, remain permanently locked to a single patch, or evolve over time as the original game once did.

The company has also acknowledged that the mode's long-term future could depend on player interest after release.

A Nostalgic Return Before Riot's Bigger Plans

Although League Classic has generated significant excitement, Riot says it isn't the major announcement the company teased earlier this year.

That reveal is still planned for 2027, with more details expected around this year's League of Legends World Championship.

For now, League Classic gives longtime fans exactly what they've been asking for: an opportunity to revisit the League of Legends they first fell in love with, complete with the original champions, iconic items, and gameplay that helped shape one of gaming's biggest esports.
