NiKo Finally Wins His First Major as Falcons Sweep FURIA at IEM Cologne 2026
After 17 Major appearances, NiKo finally lifted his first Counter-Strike Major trophy as Falcons defeated FURIA in the IEM Cologne 2026 grand final. m0NESY was named tournament MVP.

Team Falcons are your IEM Cologne 2026 champions after defeating FURIA 3-0 in the grand final, securing the organization's first Counter-Strike Major title and finally delivering the trophy that had eluded Nikola "NiKo" Kovač throughout his career.
For years, NiKo's name appeared in every discussion about the greatest players in Counter-Strike history. At the same time, those conversations always came with the same caveat: he had never won a Major. Despite building a résumé filled with elite trophies, MVP medals, and unforgettable performances, Counter-Strike's biggest prize remained just out of reach. That changed in Cologne, where the Bosnian veteran lifted his first Major trophy in his 17th appearance at the event.
The victory also marked the culmination of Falcons' ambitious project. Since bringing NiKo into the roster in early 2025, the organization has continued investing heavily in championship-caliber talent. The additions of Ilya "m0NESY" Osipov and Maksim "kyousuke" Lukin transformed Falcons into one of the most dangerous teams in the world on paper, but the roster spent much of the last year dealing with runner-up finishes and questions about whether it could ever live up to expectations. Cologne finally provided the answer.
Falcons Survive a Brutal Playoff Run
Falcons' road to the title was far from straightforward. While FURIA arrived in the final after an impressive tournament of their own, Falcons had already navigated what many considered the toughest side of the bracket.
The team eliminated Natus Vincere before taking down Vitality and Spirit in back-to-back playoff series. Both matches went the distance and required Falcons to overcome two of the strongest teams in Counter-Strike, making their eventual grand final appearance feel more earned than inevitable. By the time they reached Sunday, Falcons looked like a team that had grown stronger with every match.
A key factor throughout the tournament was the play of m0NESY, who consistently delivered when Falcons needed him most. The Russian AWPer entered the grand final as one of the standout performers of the event and continued that form against FURIA. His performances throughout the tournament ultimately earned him the MVP medal, adding another achievement to what has already been a remarkable year for one of Counter-Strike's brightest stars.
FURIA Could Not Match Falcons in the Final
History was guaranteed regardless of the result, as neither Falcons nor FURIA had ever won a Counter-Strike Major. Once the series began, however, Falcons quickly established themselves as the stronger side.
Mirage started disastrously for the Brazilians, who found themselves trailing 0-8 before finally getting on the board. FURIA managed to recover enough rounds late in the half to remain competitive, but they spent most of the map trying to catch a Falcons side that seemed firmly in control. m0NESY played a major role in securing the opener, posting huge impact numbers and consistently finding openings that FURIA struggled to answer.
Anubis followed a similar pattern. While FURIA enjoyed moments of success and briefly looked capable of leveling the series, Falcons took over after the side switch. m0NESY and kyousuke led the charge as the European side strung together a dominant run on the T side, pushing themselves within touching distance of the championship.
The final map, Inferno, never truly felt like the beginning of a comeback. FURIA fought hard to stay alive, but Falcons continued finding answers whenever the Brazilians threatened to build momentum. NiKo and kyousuke combined for 33 kills on the map, helping close out the series and bringing an end to one of the longest-running storylines in Counter-Strike.

The Final Piece of NiKo's Legacy
NiKo's legacy was never defined by a lack of skill or success. Few players in Counter-Strike history can match his longevity, consistency, and influence on the game. Yet the absence of a Major title always lingered in the background whenever fans debated where he belonged among the all-time greats.
That conversation looks very different now. After more than a decade of trying, countless playoff appearances, and several heartbreaking defeats, NiKo finally has the one trophy that had escaped him throughout his career. Falcons leave Cologne with their first Major title, m0NESY leaves with another MVP award, and Counter-Strike leaves with one less unanswered question.
NiKo is finally a Major champion.
