Alpaca has taken a significant step towards the prediction market industry after its subsidiary, Alpaca Derivatives, registered as a Futures Commission Merchant (FCM) with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and became a member of the National Futures Association (NFA). The move lays the groundwork for the company to support prediction markets through its network of brokerage partners.

Rather than launching its own prediction market exchange, Alpaca plans to use its brokerage infrastructure to help partners integrate federally regulated event contracts into their existing platforms. The company says the expansion builds on its existing API first model, which already powers stock, options and crypto trading for fintech firms around the world.

Expanding Its Brokerage Offering

Alpaca's FCM registration gives the company the regulatory framework needed to broker futures and event contracts, although prediction markets are not yet live on the platform.

The company has not announced which exchange it intends to partner with or when event contracts will become available. However, the registration signals Alpaca's intention to broaden its services as demand for federally regulated prediction markets continues to grow.

Prediction Markets Continue to Attract New Entrants

Alpaca joins a growing list of companies positioning themselves within the prediction market ecosystem.

Rather than operating exchanges directly, some firms are focusing on the infrastructure that supports the industry, including brokerage services, trading technology and compliance solutions. As more fintech companies explore the sector, prediction markets are evolving into a broader ecosystem that extends well beyond the exchanges themselves.

Building for the Next Phase of Growth

Although Alpaca has yet to announce a launch date or its first brokerage partners for prediction markets, the latest regulatory approval suggests the company is now preparing for the next phase of the industry's development.

As event contracts continue to gain more focus across the United States, infrastructure providers are expected to play an increasingly important role in helping brokers and fintech platforms offer prediction market products to their customers. Alpaca's latest move highlights how competition is expanding beyond operators, with technology providers also positioning themselves for future growth.
