Connecticut Judge Deals Kalshi Another Legal Setback

Kalshi has suffered another setback in its ongoing legal battle with state regulators after a Connecticut federal judge denied the company's request for a preliminary injunction.

The ruling allows Connecticut to continue enforcing its gambling laws against Kalshi while the case moves through the courts. In the decision, the judge concluded that the platform's sports event contracts are sports wagers rather than the type of financial products Kalshi argues fall exclusively under federal regulation.

Court Rejects Kalshi's Argument

Kalshi had asked the court to temporarily block Connecticut regulators from taking action against its sports prediction markets, arguing that its contracts are regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) under the Commodity Exchange Act.

The judge disagreed, finding that the contracts closely resemble sports betting and are therefore not entitled to the protections Kalshi asked for at this stage of the case. As a result, Connecticut remains free to enforce its gaming laws while the lawsuit continues.

Another Blow in a Growing Legal Battle

The decision adds to other recent courtroom challenges for Kalshi as more states question whether sports event contracts should be regulated as financial products or gambling.

Over the past year, states including New York, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Washington and Connecticut have all challenged the company's sports markets, saying that they fall under state gambling laws rather than federal commodities regulations. Kalshi, meanwhile, continues to maintain that the CFTC has exclusive authority over its exchange.

Pressure Builds on Prediction Markets

The Connecticut ruling is another reminder that the legal landscape surrounding prediction markets remains far from settled.

While some courts have previously sided with Kalshi on questions of federal oversight, others have taken a different view, leaving operators to navigate a changing legal landscape complex patchwork of state and federal decisions.
