Denmark has become the latest European country to block access to Polymarket, with a court ruling that the prediction market platform is operating in breach of the country's gambling laws.

The decision follows legal action by the Danish Gambling Authority, which said that Polymarket was offering gambling services without the licence required to operate in Denmark. As a result, internet service providers across the country have been instructed to block access to the platform as a wider crackdown on unlicensed gambling websites.

Regulators Step Up Enforcement

The ruling adds Polymarket to a daily growing list of websites blocked by Danish authorities in recent years.

Under Denmark's enforcement process, regulators can ask the courts to order internet providers to restrict access to operators found to be offering illegal gambling services. Once a court approves the request, the blocking order is extended across participating telecommunications providers, making the platform inaccessible to users in the country.

More Pressure on Prediction Markets in Europe

Denmark's decision is the latest example of European regulators taking a closer look at prediction market platforms.

Over the past year, several countries have increased scrutiny of operators such as Polymarket, arguing that many of the products they offer fall within existing gambling laws. The latest ruling follows similar enforcement action in countries including France, where regulators also ordered internet providers to block access to the platform over licensing concerns.

Regulatory Challenges Continue

The latest development highlights the different regulatory approaches prediction market operators continue to face around the world.

While platforms such as Polymarket continue to expand in some jurisdictions, they are also encountering growing resistance in markets where regulators believe event contracts should be treated as gambling products. As more countries review how prediction markets fit within existing legislation, further enforcement action could follow in other regulated markets.
