Florida has filed a pair of lawsuits against several major sweepstakes casino operators, including Stake, Chumba Casino, LuckyLand Slots and Global Poker, in the latest crackdown on the industry's dual currency gaming model.

Filed by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, the lawsuits say that the platforms are operating illegal online gambling businesses while presenting themselves as sweepstakes casinos. The state is looking at court orders that would permanently stop the operators from offering their services in Florida, along with financial penalties and consumer refunds.

State Alleges Illegal Gambling

According to the complaints, the targeted platforms allow users to purchase virtual currency packages that include sweepstakes coins, which can then be used to play casino style games for prizes redeemable for cash or other rewards.

Florida are saying that this model effectively amounts to unlicensed gambling and violates both the state's gambling laws and consumer protection legislation. Officials also claim the platforms fail to provide the same safeguards and regulatory oversight required of licensed gambling operators.

Pressure Continues to Build on Sweepstakes Casinos

The lawsuits are the latest sign of the regulatory pressure on sweepstakes casinos across the United States.

Over the past year, several states have introduced legislation, issued cease and desist orders or launched legal action against operators using dual currency models. Florida's latest move adds further momentum to that trend and highlights the increasing scrutiny facing the sector.

Another Key Test for the Industry

If successful, the lawsuits could have significant implications for sweepstakes operators looking to continue offering their products in major U.S. markets.

The cases also reinforce the discussion over where sweepstakes gaming ends and online gambling begins. With more regulators taking action, the industry's legal landscape continues to evolve, and future court decisions could play an important role in determining how these platforms operate across the country.
