The first stage of The International 2026 is over, and the field has been cut from 16 teams to eight. After four days of Swiss-format action and a brutal Elimination Stage, the teams heading to the main event in Shanghai are finally confirmed.
The Playoffs will take place from August 20 to 23 at the SPD Bank Oriental Sports Center, where the remaining teams will battle through an eight-team double-elimination bracket for the Aegis of Champions.
Team Vision Set The Pace As Nigma Galaxy Shocked Spirit
TEAM VISION, competing as PARIVISION, was the standout team of the Group Stage. The Eastern European powerhouse went undefeated and became the first team to qualify for the Playoffs after sweeping Team Spirit 2-0. VISION had already beaten Team Falcons and BoomBoys during the opening rounds, continuing the form that saw them win DreamLeague Season 29 and the Dota 2 Esports World Cup earlier this year.
Team Liquid also advanced directly from the Group Stage after beating Aurora Gaming in the final advancement match. Nigma Galaxy provided perhaps the biggest surprise, sweeping Team Spirit 2-0 to finish 4-1 and take the third direct Playoffs spot.
That left 10 teams fighting for the remaining five places in the Elimination Stage.
The biggest story from that stage was Team Yandex, which recovered from a disappointing 2-3 Group Stage record to beat LGD Gaming 2-1 in a reverse sweep. Yandex survived a 68-minute deciding game to become the final team into the Playoffs.
Team Falcons, the defending champions, also survived after sweeping Vici Gaming 2-0. BoomBoys eliminated Aurora Gaming, while Team Spirit recovered from their surprise loss to Nigma by beating Team Resilience. Iron Wing, competing as 1w Team, completed the eight-team field by defeating GamerLegion.
The Final Eight
The TI 2026 Playoffs will feature:
- TEAM VISION (PARIVISION)
- Team Liquid
- Nigma Galaxy
- Team Falcons
- BoomBoys (BetBoom Team)
- Team Spirit
- Iron Wing (1w Team)
- Team Yandex
VISION, Liquid and Nigma earned their places directly from the Group Stage, while the other five had to survive the elimination bracket.
There is plenty of intrigue in that group. VISION arrives as one of the tournament favorites after an undefeated opening stage, while Falcons are still alive in their attempt to defend the Aegis they won last year. Spirit, meanwhile, went from looking like one of the strongest teams in the tournament to losing their direct qualification match against Nigma before recovering against Resilience.
Yandex's qualification is another major storyline. They entered TI with expectations of making a deep run but struggled through the Group Stage. Their reverse sweep of LGD keeps those title ambitions alive.
LGD's elimination is particularly unfortunate given the circumstances surrounding its roster. The team entered TI without its original mid laner Santiago “TaiLung” Agüero Gustavo, who was banned shortly before the tournament over competitive integrity concerns. LGD brought in two-time TI champion Topson as a last-minute replacement, and despite the difficult circumstances, the team still reached the Elimination Stage with a 3-2 record before falling to Yandex.
Eight Teams Are Out
The Group Stage immediately eliminated HULIGANI, OG and Xtreme Gaming.
Xtreme's exit is one of the biggest disappointments of the tournament. The Chinese squad entered TI as last year's runner-up but was eliminated by Team Resilience in a 2-0 series. OG also survived one elimination match against HULIGANI before being swept by GamerLegion in the following round.
The Elimination Stage then claimed five more teams: Aurora Gaming, Vici Gaming, Team Resilience, GamerLegion and LGD Gaming.
That means no Chinese team will play in the TI 2026 Playoffs, despite the tournament being held in Shanghai. Vici Gaming fell to Falcons, Resilience lost to Spirit, and LGD's defeat to Yandex ended the country's remaining hopes of having a home representative in the main event.
The elimination of LGD also closes the chapter on what could have been one of the tournament's most unusual runs. After losing TaiLung days before TI, the organization had to bring Topson into the lineup at extremely short notice. The Finnish veteran helped LGD make it through the Group Stage, but the team ultimately fell one series short of Shanghai's main event.
TI 2026 Playoffs Start August 20
The remaining eight teams now get a few days before the TI 2026 Playoffs begin on August 20.
The main event will run through August 23 at the SPD Bank Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai. The bracket will use a double-elimination format, giving every team except the eventual Grand Final loser a chance to fight through the lower bracket.
After an unpredictable opening stage that eliminated last year's runner-up and left China without a home representative, the tournament is now down to eight teams.
The Aegis is officially up for grabs.
