There is something different about watching The International finally move into its main event. After four days of a brutal group stage, the crowd is back, the stage is set, and the Aegis of Champions is finally within reach.
TI 2026 officially moved into its playoff stage in Shanghai on August 20 at the SPD Bank Oriental Sports Center, where the opening ceremony brought some familiar TI spectacle before the first matches got underway. The main event runs through August 23.
The ceremony opened with an opera performance built around the Dota 2 theme, giving the Shanghai crowd a suitably dramatic introduction to the final stage of the tournament. Then came a message from the man Dota fans have come to know as Lord Gaben.
Gabe Newell was not in Shanghai for the event, but he still appeared through a video message to wish the players the best ahead of the battle for the Aegis. Newell had previously announced Shanghai as the host city for TI 2026, marking the tournament's return to China after seven years.
Then it was time for the games.
Team Spirit Start TI Playoffs With A Statement
The first series of the main event saw Team Spirit take down Iron Wing 2-0, immediately putting the two-time TI champions into the upper-bracket semifinals.
Spirit entered the tournament with plenty of questions after needing to qualify for TI through the European regional qualifiers, but their group-stage run quickly changed the conversation. They won their first three series before eventually finishing the group stage with a 3-2 record and advancing through the elimination round.
Against Iron Wing, however, Spirit looked much more comfortable. The sweep guarantees them at least a top-six finish, while their reward is an upper-bracket semifinal against the winner of TEAM VISION and BoomBoys.
Iron Wing are not finished either. Their loss simply sends them into the lower bracket, where they will have to fight to keep their TI run alive.
TEAM VISION Survive BoomBoys In A Thriller
The second series produced a much closer battle as TEAM VISION defeated BoomBoys 2-1.
VISION came into the playoffs as one of the biggest favorites for the Aegis after going undefeated during the group stage. They carried that momentum into the main event, although BoomBoys pushed them considerably harder than their previous meeting.
BoomBoys managed to take the second game and put VISION under serious pressure in the decider, but the tournament favorites eventually closed out the series.
The victory sends VISION into the upper-bracket semifinals against Team Spirit, setting up one of the biggest matchups of the next stage.
BoomBoys, meanwhile, drop into the lower bracket and will face Iron Wing in an elimination series.
That is the important part of the TI format: losing in the upper bracket does not mean going home immediately. Both Iron Wing and BoomBoys still have a path to the Aegis, but one more loss will end their tournament.
The remaining playoff action will continue through August 23, when the final two teams meet for the championship in Shanghai.
After the chaos of the group stage, TI 2026 has finally reached the part everyone came to see. The bracket is unforgiving now, and every series brings one team closer to the Aegis and another closer to elimination.
